How Fat Grafting is Performed

Dr. Foulad typically performs fat grafting using local anesthesia. Patients remain comfortable throughout the duration of the procedure. Dr. Foulad first obtains fat from one part of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, or inner or outer thigh. He obtains this fat gently using a small liposuction cannula. The incisions made for the fat removal are only a few millimeters in length and usually heal very nicely. Dr. Foulad then processes and purifies the harvested fat. The fat is then carefully and strategically injected into your desired areas until the appropriate volume and shape are met. Usually the fat is injected using a microcannula, similar to the technique as filler treatment.

How many treatments will I require?

Some patients reach their desired results with just one fat transfer session. While in other patients, a second or third session may be necessary in order to achieve the most optimized result. This is because the amount of fat that survives is not completely predictable.

Over time, some of the transferred fat may reabsorb in some patients. If this occurs, additional treatment can be considered.

How long does fat transfer last?

Facial fat grafting typically lasts for many years, and can be permanent. Once the transferred fat integrates within the adjacent tissues, it will remain there for a long time.

How Is the Donor Fat Harvested, And What Techniques Ensure Its Viability for Transfer?

The donor fat is harvested using micro liposuction. During this process, typically one to two very small incisions are made in the donor area, which could be the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks. A thin tube called a cannula is inserted through these incisions to suction out fat. The harvested fat is then processed and purified through centrifugation or decantation to separate viable fat cells from the liquid. This ensures that healthy, intact fat cells are used for the transfer.

How Do Surgeons Determine the Amount of Fat Needed for Effective Grafting, and What Factors Influence This Decision?

Surgeons determine the amount of fat needed for grafting based on several factors, including the volume loss or augmentation desired by the patient, the characteristics of the donor and recipient sites, and the expected rate of fat absorption. During consultation, the surgeon evaluates the patient’s anatomy, discusses their aesthetic goals, and uses their experience and expertise to estimate the volume of fat required, considering that not all fat cells will survive the transfer.

Can the Results of Fat Grafting Change with Weight Fluctuations?

Yes, transferred, or grafted fat behaves like any other fat in the body, meaning it can increase or decrease in volume with weight fluctuations. Significant weight gain or loss can affect the results, potentially altering the size and shape of the grafted area. A stable weight is recommended to maintain consistent results.

What Preoperative Care Is Recommended to Maximize Fat Grafting Outcomes?

Patients may be advised to stop taking certain medications or supplements that can increase bleeding, follow a healthy diet to support healing, and avoid smoking for one to two months before the procedure. It is also important to be at a stable and healthy weight prior to the fat transfer.

What Postoperative Care Is Recommended to Maximize Fat Grafting Outcomes?

Proper nutrition and rest are crucial for healing. Patients should follow their surgeon’s specific instructions on care and any medications prescribed to manage pain and reduce the risk of infection.

What Factors Influence the Cost of Fat Grafting Procedures?

The cost of fat grafting procedures can vary widely depending on several factors, including the complexity of the procedure, the amount of fat being transferred, and additional fees such as anesthesia and facility fees.
